Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation
The Herbie Morici Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Herbie Morci who passed away suddenly at the age of 32 years old. Herbie’s father, Herb, has been a vital part of the success of California Police Youth Charities and our ability to reach out in a positive way to kids within the State of California. We are honored to have Herb as a friend of CPYC and we felt it appropriate to honor his eldest son who had dedicated much of his own life to coaching & mentoring kids.
The Common Knowledge Foundation is an internet based organization that facilitates scholarships for various groups. The concept of this scholarship foundation is that the competitive process is equal and fair based on common knowledge questions presented in a timed format. The student with the best score on the test in the least amount of time wins the scholarship. The student is given information about what to research for the test questions and then sent to various websites where the answers to the question are located. Each student must study and research the various answers to questions in order to be successful.
One high school senior from the Class of 2007 in each of California’s 58 counties was awarded a $500 scholarship. The money is posted in their account at the college they are attending. The money is used for expenses related to college such as books and tuition. If the money is not used, it is returned to CPYC’s scholarship fund to be distributed to future eligible students.

The Youth Leadership Scholarship award is presented to 20 high school seniors from the Class of 2008 that will be attending college in the Fall of 2008. The essay competition requires students to describe how they have made a positive difference in their communities during their high school years. The scholarship is $1,000 per student and to be eligible, the student must be a biological or adopted child of an active or retired law enforcement officer within the State of California. This scholarship was created in an effort to recognize the sacrifices that law enforcement officers endure daily while protecting the lives and property of California’s citizens. California Narcotics Officer’s Association has facilitated this scholarship program and has selected the winners from the many essays they have received.
